THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

The 10 Commandments are found in the Bible's Old Testament at Exodus, Chapter 20. They were given directly by God to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai after He had delivered them from slavery in Egypt:

"And God spoke all these words, saying: 'I am the LORD your God…

ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'

TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'

THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'

FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'

FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.'

SIX: 'You shall not murder.'

SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.'

EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.'

NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'

TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'

THE ULTIMATE QUESTION

What shall I do to inherit eternal life?

You know the commandments, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.” If we say we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins. The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus. God demonstrates His own love towards us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. All who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. Repent therefore and be converted, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. Eternal life is found in knowing the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom He has sent. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.

HOW DO I BECOME A CHRISTIAN?

Here is a suggested prayer. This is not a ritual based on specific words, but rather, a prayerful guideline for your sincere step of faith.

“Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.”

HISTORY OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH

Calvary Baptist Church was organized on March 29, 1953, originally, as Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, adopting its present name in 1956. Its first building was the old Seven Pines Baptist Church building, purchased in April 1953 and moved to Patterson Street, Highway 64, just east of Highway 3. In the fall of 1953, Calvary joined Barnwell Baptist Association.

Three acres of property was purchased on Highway 3 and the building was moved to its present location in Januray 1956. As membership grew, additional rooms were added to the church building for Sunday School classrooms.

The new sanctuary was built in 1957 with members supplying the labor. The old sanctuary was used for more sunday school classrooms. The first parsonage was purchased in 1961. It was located in Richardson Park, but was sold some years later.

The Educational Building and Fellowship Hall was built in 1971. After moving into the new educational building, the old sanctuary was sold and torn down.

A house adjoining the property as its present location on Marlboro Avenue was purchased in 1975 to become the parsonage. During the later part of 1979 and early 1980, a steeple and front porch were added to the sanctuary.

Remodeling of the present sanctuary was undertaken in 1981; new ceiling installed, choir area moved behind pulpit, carpet installed, light fixtures changed and walls wallpapered. Twelve windows in the sanctuary were replaced with stain glass windows in 1988. In 1989, construction was begun to add eight new Sunday School rooms to the Educational Building.

In May 1991, 3.74 acres north of present property was purchased. During the May 1996 Business Meeting, it was voted to refinish pews, communion table, four flower stands, three pulpit chairs, replace carpet, add seat and back upholstery to choir seats, pad pew seats, new baptistery drapery, new sound system, new shingles on all buildings and purchase a new church sign. The remodeling was completed by July 1996.

Calvary Baptist Church has had two members called into full time Christian service, Frank P. Northcutt, pastoral ministry and Gleen Creech, Foreign Ministry. Frank is now pastor at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, Gaffney, South Carolina. He is married to Toni and they have two children Rebekah and Marshall. Glenn is now serving in Seoul, Korea with his wife, Pam and their two sons, Harrison and Hayes.

Rev. Billy Mew began to write the history of Calvary Baptist Church in November 1996. This history covered 45 years from March 8, 1953 through September 30, 1998 (end of church year). Rev. Mew completed the history of Calvary Baptist Church and a special service was held on March 28, 1999 at 3:00 pm for the signing and distribution of "Reflections From Calvary." Window treatments throughout the educational building and fellowship hall were given to the church in 1999. In 2001, the church began and finished construction on an Audio/Video Room. An Allen Digital Protege Organ was given to the church in 2002.

Since the book was published in 1999, we have seen many exciting things take place here at Calvary.
